Installation - December 6th & 7th, 2020, in an alley

December 6th, 1989, about 5 PM, at the École Polytechnique de Montréal: fourteen young women were murdered in the space of 20 minutes… It was a dark day which shall remain engraved in our memory. Others must learn about it.

This installation is in memory of:

Annie Turcotte, 20 years old;
Geneviève Bergeron, years old;
Michèle Richard, 21 years old;
Anne-Marie Edward, 21 years old;
Barbara Daigneault, 22 years old;

Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz, 31 years old;

We must remember those 14 victims and reflect on the violence against women in our society, and the need for education, change and improvement in that society.

This art work is composed of 14 wooden boxes or “cupboards’’, installed on my back fence in an alley of an older neighborhood in Saskatoon, Canada. In this ordinary location, accessible to everyone, the work raises the curiosity of passersby, on foot or in vehicles. Beyond just a visual attraction, can these boxes induce visitors to pause, carefully observe, and reflect? The contents of the boxes, collectively, are representative of those 14 women: studying, thinking, working - living their daily lives. They are mounted in groups of 4 boxes (women of 21 and 22 years old), 7 boxes (23 to 27 years old), and 3 boxes (28 to 31 years old). Each box is dedicated to one of the 14 victims, inscribed with her name and age. However, the contents of each box are not specific or unique to the named victim. As a whole, they demonstrate a glimpse of things, positive and negative, in the daily lives of young women.

Within these boxes are objects, images or natural elements evoking concrete things and abstract concepts. For instance, simple and soft moments are represented with waterfowl down, soft animal fur, or a suspended necklace in front of a mirror. I evoke more severe moments with a box of dark earth, another with torn fabric and searching eyes. More abstract and mysterious moments are present: timelessness with a wrist watch with no hands and strange filaments; ambitions with a tall stepladder towering over a crowd of statuettes... It is left up to each visitor to personally interpret the contents of these boxes, to be inspired by them, to think about women who aspire to wonderful and fulfilling lives, when attainable…

On this memorable day, the installation Souvenon-nous…, entitled on a Map of the World, pays homage to women everywhere, and is a plea for us to take action to end violence against women in our immediate community, and everywhere on our planet.

On this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women,

LET’S WEAR THE WHITE RIBBON!

In solidarity to support The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women, on December 6th, many people wear a white ribbon in which the reverse V expresses the desire to say “No to violence”.
